José Maria Xavier

1819 - 1887

Composer, musician and priest. In his vast work, over than one hundred compositions are known. His Matinas do Natal are rare example of 19th century sacred music of Minas Gerais with printed scores. He is the author of pieces such as Ofício de Ramos, the Ofícios de Trevas and Sexta-Feira Maior which are traditionally performed nowadays in the celebrations of Holy Week in São João del Rei, his hometown, in Minas Gerais.
